Talk of the Town: Pompano Beach
Did you know that the region of South Florida stretches over 100 miles along the coastline? Saying you’re from this area or are looking for homes to purchase here requires a little more specification given the large amount of area the term “South Florida” encompasses. Perhaps you want to live in a more metropolitan area like Miami or West Palm Beach, or maybe a smaller coastal town like Boynton Beach or a development in Weston is more your fancy. Regardless of your preferences, even those example towns we just listed are all a substantial distance away from one another! If you’re searching for a rental property or to buy a home here in South Florida, you’ll probably want to familiarize yourself with the many different cities and townships this area has to offer. While the best way to do so is to find an experienced local realtor you trust (like our agents!) to be your guide, having your own background knowledge of our slice of paradise is a good idea, too. To help you do this, we’re starting our “Talk of the Town” blog post series, where we’ll feature different cities in our area and do a mini-profile on each to give you a better idea of the local scene, cost of living, lifestyle, and more! Our first installment is Pompano Beach, a quaint beachside town just north of Fort Lauderdale.
Setting the Scene
If you’re looking for a quiet, laid-back seaside town that’s brimming with culture and community, Pompano Beach may be the right choice for you. Plenty of parks and peaceful beaches characterize this small coastal city, but there’s more on the up and coming: Pompano’s art and culture scene has been growing over the years, with major revitalization projects like commissioned art installations and a brand new cultural center popping up only in the last 5 years. Biking, paddleboarding, fishing, antique shopping, catching a live band play downtown, and enjoying fresh caught seafood at one of the many highly rated restaurants in the area are some of the main activities you’ll find residents doing on any given night. Pompano Beach is perfect for young families and retirees alike looking to live in an affordable yet budding community.
A Peek at the Housing Market
Beachside condos and intracoastal properties make up a large majority of the homes in the Pompano Beach area. Charming Spanish/colonial-style properties are not uncommon, as are ceramic roofs and beachy pastel colors, all adding to the vibrancy of the town. According to Zillow, the typical home value in Pompano Beach is currently about $342,000, while, according to RentCafe, the average monthly rent is about $1,990. RentCafe also reports that renter-occupied households and owner-occupied households are near even, making it great for those who aren’t sure if they want to buy or sell yet. The most expensive neighborhoods are Santa Barbara Shores and Hillsboro Shores, while more affordable neighborhoods include Old Pompano, Lyons Park, and Avalon Harbor, just to name a few.
Our Favorite Spots
To personalize this mini-guide, here are some of our favorite places to go to around town:
Houston’s: Located just off of Atlantic Boulevard, this is our favorite high-end restaurant to go to because of its gorgeous intracoastal views.
Kite Beach: This portion of coastline is specially reserved for those who love partaking in (or watching!) kitesurfing .
Key West Cuban Cowboy Cafe: Satisfy your Cuban food craving without having to go all the way to Miami at this quaint walk-up window shop that features some delicious classics, like guava pastries and Cuban sandwiches.
Hillsboro Antique Mall: For unique trinkets and plenty of interesting shops to browse through, this antique mall is a great place to spend an afternoon.
Pompano Municipal Pier: Whether you want to fish or just take in picturesque views, a visit to the pier is always a good idea.
